Welcome!

Welcome to "Understanding The Bible!"

Though this blog is registered under one user, both Rob Bline and I (Bob Edwards) will maintain its content and field questions (as well as the occasional guest expert). This blog was originally created to accompany a course at a local church to help its members interpret the bible for themselves based on scholarly standards that apply across all forms of historical literature (not just the Bible). We may post occasional recordings from the class at the local church where this originated, but we do not want to discourage anyone who happens to stumble across this blog from participating; we'd love to help you or hear your opinion however you found us and we look forward to the diverse views that will follow!

Two simple rules for this blog:
  1. Don't attack others! Have enough confidence in your own personal beliefs to not feel the need to tear someone down for theirs.
  2. Provide support for your thoughts! It's not helpful to hear "That's wrong! You're a heretic!" (and you will doubtfully win converts to your view). What is helpful is an erudite argument; in other words, "I don't agree because of this research..." or "This teacher has a different opinion and I think they're correct..." Be constructive so that we all benefit!
Large portions of the content for the local church class (and this blog) are adapted from insights found in a book called, "How To Read The Bible For All Its Worth." We cannot recommend this book strong enough. It is an outstanding resource with a reading style that is easily comprehended by the common reader (you don't have to be a scholar).

You can get this book from either of the sources below as well as many local book stores:

If you happen to be in Granite Bay, CA, we carry copies of this book at the Fellowship Church bookstore.

Thank you for your comments! We respect all comments that support an open dialog of biblical interpretation, (whether we personally agree or not). We will only remove comments that are antagonistic or contain personal attacks at other participants. With that said, we look forward to engaging in a truly open discussion with you!
